For any image that is suffering from some form of deterioration or damage.

Each of your images is unique, the type and amount of damage the image is suffering from, the level of complexity contained within the image and the subsequent input needed to return the image to a pleasing state will determine the cost of repair.

Please find pricing guidance and brief descriptions of the kinds of issues that might be addressed within each category below, effectively images with the fewest and least challenging issues will be in a lower category, Cat 'A', for our purposes, being the lowest, and will be more economical to repair; those requiring a little more or a lot more love and attention, will cost more, but all will be discussed with you before any attempt is made to proceed.

Colour

For any black and white image where no alternative colour version exists or for a colour image that is in such a condition that some recolouring is required.

Some images can be challenging due to their complexity so prices can rise somewhat above £55, but no attempt will be made to proceed with work on any image until discussion with you has been undertaken; please be mindful that colouring an image is in addition to any restoration work that has been completed on an image before colouring begins; see the Restore Section for guidance.  For colouring please find pricing guidance below; images with the fewest, simplest elements to colour will be more economical to address.  For our purposes, as for restoration work 'Cat A', is the lowest category.  Partial rather than complete colouring of an image is of course possible; there are a couple of examples of this on the More Pictures page to demonstrate this.

Cat A

from £25

  • One or two people with uncomplicated, plain foreground and or background

  • No details that would require special attention such as flowers and patterns

  • Selective colourising

Cat B

from £40

  • 2 or 3 people

  • Some background objects

  • Some additional limited complexity such as patterns and details within clothing and flowers

Cat C

from £55

  • From 6 people and up

  • More complex backgrounds and foregrounds containing vehicles and more intricate pattern/flower details

  • Additional subjects, animals for example

*Question three of the Scanning Images Section of the FAQ, this may help you if you are unsure about image resolutions, but please ping us a message if you would like a chat.

A note on automated dust and scratch removal tools such as Digital ICE.  These tools can be very useful, but they do not work on all types of films, notably true black and white films, not chromogenic, and Kodak Kodachrome.  These systems are rarely 100% effective on images where it does work, the condition of the image is always a major factor; it is of little use to heavily soiled images.  We do make every effort and take every care to get your images as clean as possible, but some dust and marks may remain.  Please take a look at the Scanned Images Examples on the More Photos page this might be of some help although they have had some additional attention.

We also do not recommend the use of this type of software for damaged images that you may be aiming to have restored especially images that have damage across important detail, a face for example.  If you are scanning an image for restoration yourself don't apply any software of this nature, if you have access to it, and if you have damaged images within a collection that you are sending us for scanning you may want to separate these out and let us know, or let us decide what to apply based on what we see.  You are not of course obliged to utilise us for any restorations we just want to help you get the best scan outcome and not potentially introduce additional issues to an already damaged image.

A note on glass slide mounts.  These slides can become very mucky as they can trap moisture and debris between the glass and the film strip, they may also have cracked.  Many of these slide mounts were not really designed to be taken apart and reassembled.  We will clean what we can see, as all other slides, which might be enough for many images, but if everything looks a bit messy and you are looking for the best possible outcome given the slide and glass condition you should remove the film from the mount before sending to us; it is unlikely that the mount will remain useable, but they can be remounted in simple non-glass mounts.  Just make contact if you need assistance.
